Lovely is…

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, honest, just, pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, (here’s that word “If again”) if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Whatsoever things are lovely – The word here means, what is dear to. It means what is amiable – of a mind that one can love it, or to be agreeable. As a disciple i should not be sour, crabby, or irritable in my temper, or display a look that is severe, stern or unkind, and exhibit a disposition to find fault with everything. If i put forth an unlovely temper, i will undo all the good that i attempt to do at other times.

What is lovely?  Is it the sparkling water in the evening while the sun seems to rest on the sea? Is it the mountains that seem to never end? While those seem to be Lovely, they don’t seem to be the real-life definition.

Lovely: exquisitely beautiful, having a beauty that appeals to the heart or mind, highly pleasing, of a great moral or spiritual beauty

i just remembered a verse that reaffirms the reason for my mind to be set and kept on these virtues. Because…. Proverbs 23:7, says “For as ed thinketh in his heart, so is he…” In Proverbs 4:23 i are commanded, “ed, keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” And in Proverbs 23:19 “Hear thou, ed my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.” Looking on these “higher things” will guide my heart! i am what i think! Garbage in, garbage out.

There is a famous scene in he movie Peter Pan. Peter is in the children’s bedroom; they have seen him fly; and they wish to fly as well. They have tried it from the floor and they have tried it from the beds and the result is failure. “How do you do it?” John asked. And Peter answered: “You just think lovely, wonderful thoughts and they lift you up in the air.” The same is true for me as a disciple. The only way to defeat the evil thoughts is to begin to think of lovely thoughts and the weight of the world is lifted so that i can soar.

My answer to the question, “What is Lovely?” is simply this: Lovely is an experience i get when my eyes are open wide and my heart changes completely.

“Whatsoever things are true.” – “Whatsoever things are honest.” – “Whatsoever things are just.” – “Whatsoever things are pure.” – “Whatsoever things are lovely.”

All  the beautiful sentiments in the world weigh less than a single lovely action. – James  Russell Lowell
