Labeled…

From the Message. Colossians 3:9-10 Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it.

i love Paul’s optimism, “ed, you’re done with that!” He makes it sound so final. His words give me a sense that it is possible in spite of the difficulty i have in working though it. It’s as though, if Paul can do it, then, so can i. Look at who and what he was and then who and what he became. He is not preaching at me he is teaching me by sharing his own personal journey.

How about Paul referring to my stuff as the “old life?” He makes it sound like its long past, a faint memory, verses in the past twenty minutes which is closer to reality.

He then gives me an analogy that presents a clear picture. “It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes…”

Filthy: foul, disgustingly or completely dirty, vile; vulgar, obscene, contemptibly offensive, vile, or objectionable.

And not only are they all that but they are “ill-fitting…”

Ill-Fitting: not appropriate or suitable.

The only thing to be done with these clothes is to put them in the fire.

Hebrews 12:29 says, “For ed’s God [is indeed] a consuming fire.” That’s where these “very sins” need to be put, into the consuming fire of God.”

The verses prior to 29 say, “ed see to it that you do not reject Him or refuse to listen to and heed Him Who is speaking [to you now]. For if they [the Israelites] did not escape when they refused to listen and heed Him Who warned and divinely instructed them [here] on earth [revealing with heavenly warnings His will], how much less shall i escape if i reject and turn my back on Him Who cautions and admonishes [me] from heaven?”

Then jumping down to verse 28 “Let ed therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe;”

What’s that look like? Colossians 3. Aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members, now put away and rid yourselves [completely] of all these things, and do not lie to one another.

Colossians 3:10 “ed you are now dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of ed’s new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with His label on it.”
