Obsolete Yet Included…

We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”  ―    J.K. Rowling

Colossians 3:11 states that, “ed, all the old fashions are now obsolete. Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.”

This verse puts groups or concepts that separate people and divided them ou of existence. Paul speaks to all the differences, racial differences (Greek and Jew); religious differences (circumcised and uncircumcised); cultural differences (barbarian and Scythian); social differences (slave and free); and finally sexual difference (male and female).

These are not all the differences that divide people, but they give enough of a representation for God to make His point. He makes it clear that i cannot be united to Him and separated from my brother at the same time. To do something for or against a brother is to do it to Christ (Matthew 25:31-46). Because i am “in” Christ and He “in” me, i am one body. John says, “if ed does not love his brother, then ed does not love God” (I John 4:20)! From the point that i become one with Christ i must not see any of the differences with others or i will be drawn back to old garments to things which are on earth. It is now within me to see every person through Christ’s eyes and my words and deeds are to come from that position and not the differences.

“If” i am truly converted then i am motivated, guided, inspired, led by, yielding to, and empowered by the energy flowing from Christ, who lives and works in me. Christ, myself and all the converted body are together because we share the same nature.

In this world i was not born equal to everyone else. i have a different IQ, physical structure, strength. i may not equal everyone physically, mentally or economically in this life. but being raised up with Christ places me on equal footing with God and others.
Salvation means new birth. i was born the first time physically. Subsequently, i need to be born spiritually.
Paul says, that because the Colossians had undergone the radical transformation of receiving the new nature and being renewed, they should work hard at making practical the salvation Christ made possible. They should do this by ceasing to do the things that separate and start to do the things that bond.
As a side note there is some insinuation that Paul is dealing with some underlying measure of doctrinal difference which is hindering the unity problem.
“Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshipers met together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be, were they to become ‘unity’ conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship.”  ―    A.W.
