Built on Rock or Ground?

i like to get different perspectives when i am studying an entire chapter. One reason is that i am trying to determine if this is a single topic for a specific people or time or… is it a God principle. It is my sense that Colossians 3 while being written to a specific church or people is also written to me. The message is interwoven through-out the entire word. Today i am looking at Luke 6 for additional perspective. my conclusion… these are principles that apply to all mankind in every generation, for yesterday, today and the days to come.

Principle: an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct, a fundamental, primary, or general law or truth from which others are derived, guiding sense of the requirements and obligations of right conduct:

Luke 6:20 And Jesus solemnly lifted up His eyes on His disciple ed, He said: Blessed happy—with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, apart from your outward condition—and to be envied is ed who is poor and lowly and afflicted (destitute of wealth, influence, position, and honor), for the kingdom of God is his!

ed is blessed, happy, apart from my outward condition. Jesus says that ed has found fullness and satisfaction in God’s favor and God’s salvation because by ed’s choosing he is destitute of wealth, influence, position, and honor, and it’s okay because the kingdom of God is his! Jesus confirms that ed is fulfilled in being a simple creation of God. This is not to declare or boast of any accomplishment as though i have reached my destination. It’s a word of encouragement to keep me moving.

Luke 6:36 says, ed be merciful (sympathetic, tender, responsive, and compassionate) even as your Father is [all these]. Sounds just like Paul!

43 For there is no good (healthy) tree/ed that bears decayed (worthless, stale) fruit, nor on the other hand does a decayed (worthless, sickly) tree/ed bear good fruit.

44 For each tree/ed is known and identified by its/his own fruit; for figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor is a cluster of grapes picked from a bramblebush.

45 The upright (honorable, intrinsically good) man/ed out of the good treasure [stored] in his/ed’s heart produces what is upright (honorable and intrinsically good), and the evil man/ed out of the evil storehouse brings forth that which is depraved (wicked and intrinsically evil); for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart his/ed’s mouth speaks.

46 Why do you call Me, Lord, Lord, and do not [practice] what I tell you?

47 For ed comes to Me and listens to My words [in order to heed their teaching] and does them, I will show ed what he is like:

48 He/ed is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood arose, the torrent broke against that house and could not shake or move it, because it had been securely built or founded on a rock.

49 But if ed merely hears and does not practice doing My words he is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the torrent burst, and immediately it collapsed and fell, and the breaking and ruin of that house was great.

If for one moment i think that because i have not collapsed and fell and the breaking and ruin of my house does not appear to be great, that i am safe… i would be sadly mistaken. Perhaps the torrent burst has not come, yet? Why gamble? Let my yes be yes as i am digging down deep and laying a foundation on the Rock.

The Lord will not be mocked! He is sovereign. Vengence is His, and He will repay. We who have His Spirit should ascribe to the high calling upon our lives. I pray that my fruit remains. All that’s done for Christ will last. Everyhting else will fade/rot away! Maranatha!

  2. ] for “sin” [see Black, An Aramaic Approach to the Gospels and Acts, 102; Fitzmyer, Luke, 2.906]. None of these petitions would have seemed unusual to Jesus’ contemporaries; no doubt Jews made similar peititions of God all the time. Matthew’s version adds as a supplement to this final petition: “But deliver us from the evil one.” To be delivered from trial is to be delivered from the influence of Satan or spirits under his authority no doubt on the assumption that these beings are responsible for human suffering.
