Wives Be…

Posted: May 6, 2013 in Colossians 3

i sure wish i could have started off with my role as the husband verses my wife’s role. But… that’s not the way Paul chose to write it. i would like to preface everything i am posting about wives with the understanding that wives are not ever to be doormats and they are not to be abused physically, or mentally. How i am viewing this verse is that it’s one of those “things above” that i am to think on. If i understand God’s purpose and desire for a wife then regardless of what she says or does i “know” what God intended and am now responsible to respond accordingly.

Colossians 3:18 AMP. Wives, be subject to your husbands [subordinate and adapt yourselves to them], as is right and fitting and your proper duty in the Lord.

Subordinate: under the authority and adapt: adjust oneself to different conditions.

For many days I knew these verses were coming and I struggled with relevance. How do these specific relationships differ from everything Paul has already shared with me? Were they an after thought? Did he come to verse 17 and feel as though he left out something? Did he throw these verses in for good measure or was he covering his bases by mentioning these specific relationships? I am taking it that he wanted me to know specifically how all the verses above connect with these more intimate relationships. It’s another way of saying what he has already said but specifically what being raised up in Christ looks like for my closer more intimate relationships.

Wives… A married woman, especially when considered in relation to her partner in marriage, and in case there is any doubt the dictionary says that it is a woman. A man cannot be a wife, just saying.

be… exist or live, occupy a place or position. Wives are to occupy a place or position. This has been since the creation of man and woman. Genesis 1: 18 Now the Lord God said, It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every [wild] beast and living creature of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name. And Adam gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the air and to every [wild] beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs or a part of his side and closed up the [place with] flesh. And the rib or part of his side which the Lord God had taken from the man He built up and made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

“Wives BE” Married women exist, live, occupy this place or position. Don’t try to occupy, but persist in occupying with the confidence that the Lord has built you up, made you for this purpose. Occupy this place, this position. David occupied the position as he stood before Goliath knowing that the Lord God would deliver his enemy into his hand. i am not suggesting that husbands are a wife’s enemy although that’s how many marriages are often lived out. With that same confidence “wives be.”

  1. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good (suitable and pleasant) for food and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate: and she gave some also to her husband, and he ate.
