Right, Fitting, Proper Duty In The Lord…

Posted: May 10, 2013 in Colossians 3

God is looking for imperfect men and women who have learned to walk in  moment-by-moment dependence on the Holy Spirit. Christians who have come to  terms with their inadequacies, fears, and failures. Believers who have become  discontent with ‘surviving’ and have taken the time to investigate everything  God has to offer in this life.- Charles Stanley

Colossians 3:18 Wives, be subject to your husbands [subordinate and adapt yourselves to them], as is right and fitting and your proper duty in the Lord.

In 1 Peter 2 there are words that i want to use as a summary about “wives be subject.” Please forgive my liberties in making these words specifically for wives. i understand that Peter is talking to a much broader group but i believe that by that fact it would include wives it allows me to share today’s thoughts in conclusion of this verse.

Peter says, Wives you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a wife [at all], but now you are God’s bride; once you were unpitied, but now you are pitied and have received mercy.

Beloved wives, I implore you as aliens and strangers and exiles [in this world] to abstain from the sensual urges (the evil desires, the passions of the flesh, your lower nature) that wage war against the soul. Wives conduct yourselves properly (honorably, righteously) with your husband, so that, although he may slander you as an evildoer, [yet] he may by witnessing your good deeds [come to] glorify God in the day of inspection when God shall look upon you wives as a pastor or shepherd looks over his flock.

Wives be submissive to your husband and to every human institution and authority for the sake of the Lord, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to bring vengeance (punishment, justice) to those who do wrong and to encourage those who do good service.

Further on Peter says, “For even to this were you called wives, [it is inseparable from your vocation] (Which is being raised up with Christ). For Christ also suffered for you, leaving you [His personal] example, so that you should follow in His footsteps.” The role of a wife can be a difficult one, so much so that Christ left wives His personal example, SO THAT WIVES WOULD FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS.

The meaning of subject is not an inferior to a superior. It is of two equals. One chooses for the sake of God, the other for the sake of self. One chooses the two shall become one, the other says it’s all about me. One chooses to subject and the other rules and reigns. The task at hand for me is to know these truths about Ann Marie better than her thus being able to be the covering she desires.

Wives, it is God’s will and intention that by doing right [your good and honest lives] should silence (muzzle, gag) the ignorant charges and ill-informed criticisms of foolish persons.
