They Did What?

“I have noticed that even those who assert that everything is predestined and that we can change nothing about it still look both ways before they cross the street” ― Stephen Hawking

i don’t know where i have been, but i have never read or heard this scripture before. It’s Acts 1:15-26 At first reading it causes me great pause. This is the description of what took place regarding the replacement of Judas. It comes at the end but i must share the conversation leading up to my reason for pause.

During this time, Peter stood up in the company—there were about 120 of them in the room at the time—and said, “Friends, long ago the Holy Spirit spoke through David regarding Judas, who became the guide to those who arrested Jesus. That Scripture had to be fulfilled, and now has been. Judas was one of us and had his assigned place in this ministry.

No problem to this point.

“As you know, he took the evil bribe money and bought a small farm. There he came to a bad end, rupturing his belly and spilling his guts. Everybody in Jerusalem knows this by now; they call the place Murder Meadow. It’s exactly what we find written in the Psalms: Let his farm become haunted so no one can ever live there.

Not sure i had ever read or heard about Judas buying a farm but no matter. Rupturing his belly and spilling his guts? I had always thought he had hung himself?

“And also what was written later: Let someone else take over his post.”

“Judas must now be replaced. The replacement must come from the company of men who stayed together with us from the time Jesus was baptized by John up to the day of his ascension, designated along with us as a witness to his resurrection.”

Makes perfect sense! The position is not open to just anyone.

They nominated two: Joseph Barsabbas, nicknamed Justus, and Matthias.

Both were known by Jesus. Still good to go.

Then they prayed, “You, O God, know every one of us inside and out. Make plain which of these two men you choose to take the place in this ministry and leadership that Judas threw away in order to go his own way.”

“Then they prayed.” A great example to follow, right? The prayer seems to be on track as well, right? “God You make plain.” But then what do they do and i’m not asking that as to condemn them, i just don’t get it!

They then drew straws.

They drew straws? Surely you gest! They drew straws! Where was the praying, fasting and waiting for God to make plain? It seems to me these… disciples didn’t learn or forgot all that Jesus taught, or… i am missing something here. Maybe i am just over reacting?

Matthias won and was counted in with the eleven apostles.

More to come on this!

Yep…this has always intrigued me too. Draw straws…really guys? Unless of course they believed Gods divine leadership could be seen in ‘random’ acts of chance?
