Measure #1 – Helpful for Building Others Up

In my life i find that what gets measured… gets done. It’s true, give me a task with no finish date and i tend to put it off for the more urgent as i perceive it. This goes for being on time as well. I hate being late under any circumstances. When given a set time to be there if i’m not ten minutes early then I am late. What gets measure… gets done.

Using that idea, i am going change it up on Fridays for a while. Fridays will be identified as MEASURES. There are two uses for the word measure and it is my intent to use both. It may get a little tricky to use one word with two different meanings within the same text, so pay close attention.

First, a MEASURE has the right reserved to the people to approve or reject an act of the legislature, or the right of the people to approve or reject legislation that has been referred to them by the legislature. So with slight adaptions here’s my use. A MEASURE/verse has the right reserved for me to approve or reject an act of the Word of God, or the right for me to approve or reject the Word that has been referred to me by God. In this use i will make MEASURE all caps to help clarify.

The plan is to take specific verses, present them to myself as MEASURES, approve or reject them and then focus on getting the MEASURE done, so to speak. It’s like people voting for a MEASURE which has been placed on the ballot, it passes, and now becomes law.

Maybe a simpler way of defining MEASURE is to say that these Friday MEASURES are a plan or course of action taken to achieve a particular purpose. i am correlating becoming law with getting it done.

Then there is meaning number two. measure: to ascertain the extent, dimensions, quantity, capacity, etc., of, especially by comparison with a standard. This usage goes more directly to my statement that what gets measured… gets done. It’s taking an inventory of or a holding to some level of accountability regarding the MEASURES/verses that i am left to approve or reject for my life.

Of course my ultimate goal is lifestyle change. This is an invitation to anyone who reads these posts to join me in voting these MEASURES/verses into law through application and then measure my success.

So on this weeks ballot is “MEASURE” #1 from James 4:11 (MSG.) and Ephesians 4:29 (MSG.)

Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends. It’s God’s Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You’re supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny.

Ephesians 4:29 says, Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

MEASURE #1 – Intentionally think about my words regarding others. Say nothing that doesn’t encourage them and serve to benefit them and those that are listening.
