Today i’m continuing to share from the forward of the book titled Kisses From Katie. The book and this series are serving as a year end review and a glimpse of the coming year through a fearless moral inventory of my life, my faith, and my willingness to love. Again… for me is not a book to be read and thought about, it is a book to experience, a book full of sights, sounds, smells, and emotions.

images-6Book: They get excited over one smile. They are willing to feed one stomach, educate one mind, and treat one wound. They aren’t determined to revolutionize the world all at once; they’re satisfied with small changes.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. A smile… what would that get me? Feeding one stomach… i was feeding 4 stomaches including my own from the time i was 14, working almost full time to be the provider for my family while my father and mother tried to work things out. Educating one mind… i never thought much of classrooms or studying and had determined that i would make my way by working hard. Treating a wound… “man up” and move on. Revolutionizing the world… could have been my motto. i was going to not only be different, but make a difference, as i showed everyone that i was better than an alcoholic father, a suicidal mother, a seemingly weak church and an uninterested God. Small changes… unacceptable. What i needed and intended were big changes, after all, i had every drop of experience as to not how to do it and what not to be, so why not grand!

All this was revealed from the first paragraph, of the forward! As painful as it was, i knew that God was working. i was addicted to the book, to see where it would take me next and yet a little hesitant as to what else i would have to face. i don’t want to get to far ahead but images
today i do get excited over one smile, over one life changed, not by me but by God. my time in ministry is filled with feeding one stomach, helping to renew one mind through the word of God, treating the wounds of one person at a time. As Katie shares later in the book that she would be lying if she didn’t say that she sometimes longed for things in her past i to wouldn’t be honest if i did’t tell you that there are times when i long for the past, times when i lead worship for hundreds, or teaching a crowd of thousands, or doing a live radio or television show. But also like Katie… i wouldn’t trade where i am today for where i was yesterday.

Beth Clark who wrote the forward to Kisses Form Katie closes by saying “If you are ordinary but hungry to obey God, may you find inspiration and encouragement in these pages. May you find the strength to say yes and be launched into your own amazing story.” That is exactly what happened to me and so i can hope for nothing less than that to happen to you as well.

i shared with many on Thanksgiving Day these remarks that came as a direct result of reading this book. i’ll close today and also with the forward portion of this book by sharing them again.

Unknown“Not just today but everyday Ann Marie and i are learning to be grateful for who we are and what we have. Intentionally making our thanksgiving perpetual and not just one day or a season. It is surprising how contented we are with nothing definite – only a sense of existence. We believe we are ready to do this for the next ten thousand years, and exhaust it.
We are very thankful for what we have in this imperfect world.  Though better circumstances can be imagined, far worse are nearer misses than we probably care to realize.
