In Tune…

Posted: February 5, 2015 in In Tune...

i hope you enjoyed the words of the past posts in this short series. They were very personal to the author and his family so i am thankful for his willingness to share.

imagesi thought i would give some sort of example of how i use music in taking every thought captive to the word of God. For years i’ve used a God’s Promises book to help me accomplish taking my thoughts captive. i now have an app that has hundreds of scriptures and they are categorized by topics. This allows me to find a specific verse for whatever is ailing me. The nice thing is that it gives me a selection of maybe 10 or 12 different verses to select from for each topic. i simply read thru them all once or twice, sometimes three times to find the right verse for me to meditate on and use for prayer. Thus taking every thought captive to that verse, the word of God.

Here’s how the music thing fits into the picture. i am listening to hundreds of songs everyday that cover a wide variety of topics. i noticed several months ago that as circumstances would come up that would tend to distract my thoughts away from God, i could recall a song i had heard, i would find it and play it over and over until my mind was back in line with the word.

So i’ll give you a few of my favorites.

Every single day must begin with Today by Willamette Stone. i don’t believe good and bad days. Every day is a day of grace and this song reminds me that this day is the greatest day i have had the opportunity to live. This will get 365 listens this year! i even made it the ring tone on my phone so i get boaster shots through out the day.

Matthew Ward’s song The Motions was one of the first. i’ll bet i’ve listened to that song over 100 times.

More Than Enough by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir is another and i know i’ve listened to it over 200 times as i was reminding myself that God More Then Enough, all the time, in every situation.

Great is Thy Faithfulness by Gary Chapman. Can you guess what i was struggling with here?

Someone worth Dying For – Mikeschair

Unrestrained by Mandisa is a cure for everything!

There’s also Canon In D, and Kiss The Rain, no words just calming, soothing notes flowing through my mind.

images-1 Through all these songs i am redirecting my mind from the circumstances, down a  path that leads to God. Recently i have added a song named If You Want Me To by Ginny Owens. If you’re going through any struggle this song will focus your mind on God and not the circumstances

i hope you’re getting the idea but i’ll share one last song that was just added to my God’s Music Promises playlist. It’s called Shoulders by King and Country and i’m going to close by sharing the words and a link to the song. As you read the words or listen whatever is coming to kill, steal and destroy in your life you will find the strength to say STOP, enough is enough and take every thought captive to these words from God. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40wYfjv6yt8

I lookup to the mountains. Does my strength come from the mountains? No

When confusion’s my companion. And despair holds me for ransom. I will feel no fear. I know that You are near.

When I’m caught deep in the valley. With chaos for my company. I’ll find my comfort here. Cause I know that You are near

My help comes from You. You’re right here, pulling me through. You carry my weakness, my sickness, my brokenness all on Your shoulders. Your shoulders

My help comes from You. You are my rest, my rescue. I don’t have to see to believe that You’re lifting me up on Your shoulders
Your shoulders

You mend what once was shattered. And You turn my tears to laughter. Your forgiveness is my fortress. Oh Your mercy is relentless

My help is from You. Don’t have to see it to believe it

My help is from you. Don’t have to see it, ‘cause I know, ‘cause I know it’s true

My help is from You. Don’t have to see it to believe it

My help is from you. Don’t have to see it, ‘cause I know, ‘cause I know it’s true

My help is from You. Don’t have to see it to believe it

My help is from you. Don’t have to see it, ‘cause I know, ‘cause I know it’s true

My help is from You. Don’t have to see it to believe it

My help is from you. Don’t have to see it, ‘cause I know, ‘cause I know it’s true

In Tunes #3

images-1The following weekend, i was able to meet with a man that God put in my life. As we were talking, he asked me how my prayer life was, i said good and explained how, when and where it existed. i was really working on a constant prayer with God throughout the day. He asked me how my praise life was. i sorta giggled and said i’m working on it. He asked me to explain, so i told him what is written above. He paused, we prayed and he looked at me with a little smirk on his face, then he asked me if i had a Heavenly Language, i didn’t think twice about it and said yes. He then said good, instead of singing in your earthly tongue, sing in your Heavenly Tongue! To ANYONE THAT HEARS LET THEM HEAR!!!!! The next Sunday at church, during the worship service, i was singing (not loud, but signing) and i was knocked back in my seat and the Lord told me to start praying. Okay, hold on here….me of all people…… has now heard GOD talk to little me three times within the course of a month. I didn’t know what to pray, i didn’t know what i was supposed to do. This was my time to focus on the screen and try to stay in rhythm. i opened my mouth and out came the SPIRIT!!!! i was signing and praying in my HEAVENLY language as the rest of the church was singing.

So was i in tune? Don’t know, all i know is that three times in that service i was smacked back in my chair to pray and worship God tumblr_n7mbxmU0bo1t10b27o1_500even though the service was going on. All i can remember is when the pastor gave the call for people to follow Christ and pray a simple prayer with the rest of the congregation, GOD counted out loud to me TWELVE NAMES that day!! i HEARD the angels signing!

After that day, let me tell you something…..i will SING PRAISES to my LORD because he is the LAMB that was SLAIN for ME!!!  Listening to music that GLORIFIES the NAME has changed my life with Christ, i now have a one on one relationship with Him, it has helped me be a better husband, father and even a better boss at work.

images-2When you hear glory given to the Father throughout the course of the day, your spirit and life will be changed! Does it matter if you’re in musical tune or just in tune with HIM? So all i can say, is that i hope you learn from a guy that can’t sing in tune, but from a guy that can be in tune with HIM. It’s simple, there is power in words and in music that PRAISES HIS HOLY NAME!

Mine eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the lord,
He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He hath loosed his fateful lightning
of His terrible swift sword,
His truth is marching on

Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah
Glory! Glory ! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on

– Julia Ward Howe wrote the lyrics to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” after visiting a Union Army Camp on the Potomac River near Washington D.C. in December of 1861. Her ancestors were famous during The American Revolutionary War.

– While visiting the army camp, she heard a favorite marching song of the Union Army. The song was set to the melody from the parody song “John Brown’s Body.” The John Brown in the song referred to a Scottish Sergeant in the 12th Massachusetts Regiment, not John Brown the famous abolitionist.

– The song’s melody was made famous before the Civil War by a South Carolinian choirmaster and organist named William Steffe. He is believed to have written the melody in 1856. The song was originally titled “Say Brothers Will You Meet Us.”

– Reverend James Freeman Clark challenged Julia Ward Howe into writing a poem with a more powerful message for the marching song.

– That same night Julia Ward Howe dreamed the first line and awoke with it on her mind in the middle of the night. She wrote the entire poem by candle light before dawn. She forced herself up from her sleep because she was fearful that if she did not immediately write the poem she would forget it.

– The Atlantic Monthly paid her five dollars for the poem and published it in 1862, James T. Field of The Atlantic Monthly named the poem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

– The chaplain of the 122nd Ohio Regiment taught it to Union soldiers everywhere.

– It is said that President Abraham Lincoln was so moved by the song, he wept when he heard it.

In Tune #2

images-5While at work, i’ll put in my ear buds and listen to Christian radio on Pandora or iTunes radio. There are times that i can have both ear buds in and really focus on my work and the music. There are other times when i have one in my ear and tuck the other one away so i can also be aware of the background in case the phones ring or if someone asks me a question. Not everyone at work even knows that i actually have music on, most just think i’m ready for the next call to come in on my cell phone. i work in a fast pace environment and listening to music has totally helped me be more relaxed, be more patient with employees and customers. One employee pulled me aside and said she has noticed a really big difference since i started listening with my ear buds. She is a Christian, she also said i am even witnessing to people more often, talking more calmly and being more productive. If i’m out of the office and visiting customers or employees throughout the course of the day, i still make sure it’s playing in the car. Now, i can’t listen 100% of the time throughout the course of the day or some days it is not able to happen at all. It has really helped my overall relationship with Christ, my overall attitude with people and gives me a peace because i am constantly developing my closeness with Christ.

Let’s advance two weeks later….sitting in my hometown church, three weeks before Thanksgiving, the music leader lead us in America the Beautiful, tears rolled down my eyes in pride of my hometown, the reason being is how cool is it that, we can be in church and sing about our beautiful country. i’ve always been proud of America, for some reason, whenever i hear the National Anthem, i always shed a tear, guess that’s my way of showing how grateful i am. My family will wait for me to start a Nascar race, that way we can all watch the Anthem together and then they give me a moment to wipe my tears and then race on.

The next song in church that day was, Battle Hymn Of The Republic! If you haven’t heard this song, find it, it’s a Civil War song that toUnknown me is the march to freedom! i can vision the slaves signing this song working in the fields and then all in one start singing and then walking north!  Don’t know if you have ever been hit over the head with a two by four, but sitting in my pew that day i was!

i was broken, still not knowing how to worship my Heavenly Father. Then HE told me, right there, this is what I did for you! It hit me, i’ve given thanks to any veteran i’ve ever met, the meaning of the flag, going back to one of my favorite songs of all times, the reason i cherish and respect my country is there are men who have died for me! That’s when God told me, that’s what I did for you!! I gave my SON for you! He died for you!! My wife noticed me during all this, i was a mess. How many times have i heard this before? i’ll tell you right now, hundreds if not thousands, this time i heard it from GOD!

Several months ago after reading how God came to Solomon in his sleep and asked him what he wanted i realized that the night hoursimages can be more that just for sleep. i found a pair of SleepPhones which are basically like a head band with two paper thin speakers in it and it’s bluetooth. So i began listening to music in my night time hours. i immediately noticed that i was less restless and that when i did wake up i would fall back asleep much faster. i have also found that in getting up at 4 to 4:30 am every morning i have not been tired once.

Beyond that i have an hour drive to work and an hour drive home and music is a part of every hour to one degree or another.

images-4Then my new job allows me to listen to music for the entire 8.5 hours that i’m there with ear buds of course.

For many years i have looked at several ways for me to take my every thought captive to the word of God and now i have found an additional application for it. i find that i have less thoughts to fight with and even the thoughts that do try to come are defeated much quicker.

All together i’m probably listening to music around 16 hours of every day. That’s 16 hours of the word being feed into my thoughts. i do find that listening with the SleepPhones and the ear buds works better for my purpose but listening otherwise still brings me results.

Inn case your wondering this is possible because of Pandora One with it’s ability to let me create a wide range of stations and thus music styles.

UnknownThe words says that God inhabits the praises of His people. That said, i’m pretty sure that whatever God is inhabiting leaves no room for anything else. my thoughts, my heart, my mind, my emotions, all inhabited by God makes for more peace than i have ever experienced.

With that said let me share with you a version of how this has worked for someone else. This is from one of the meandiam readers.

Ed asked me to write my story about listening to praise music through-out the course of my day.  When i think of praising the Lord, i think of the music leaders on the stage and trying to keep up with them.  i always wondered what it was like to be David and play the harp to the sheep as a young man and the way he worshiped God, i thought that was pretty cool.

i cannot keep a beat, i sing off key, when people ask me to sing louder  i tell them,  i do not want to be a distraction to anyone. They often tell me, make a joyful noise! My reply is always, it’s not “joyful”! It takes my full focus to watch everyone else clapping so i can clap on beat and i have always focused on the worship leaders to follow along.

i’ve had a rough 2014 to say the least, long story short…i realized that i had no real relationship with Christ. i believed in Him, but never really knew Him. Ed challenged me after i told him that i did not know how to praise God to start listening to praise music throughout the day and sing along. Immediately my defense went up and i said, i can’t sing out loud, that’s not right! GOD DOESN’T WANT TO HEAR ME SING! i can’t carry a tune, keep a beat or able to worship God at all. Ed said try it and see what happens. Fine i thought, after all i’ve tried everything else to try and fix my relationship with Christ, i’ll give this a shot.
