Confidence and Self Confidence are hot topics these days. All around me i’m told to think confidently, to be self-assured, to live boldly. Society says, be self-confident, but what does the Word have to say about confidence and self-confidence.

The word confidence (or very similar words) is referenced 50 to 60 times in the Bible depending on the translation you’re reading.  These references refer to my trust in people, circumstances, and God.

The Word is very clear about this word confidence and adding the word self in front of it. Here’s what Philippians 3:3 says, “Have no confidence in the flesh.” Flesh as in self! If that’s not clear enough then here’s Proverbs 14:16 “A righteous man departs from evil, but a fool rages in his (self) confidence.” Neither of these verses suggest that i’m not to have confidence, but they do make it clear, that confidence in myself is misplaced.

Based on the that premise, what should confidence in my life look like? Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to trust and take refuge (have confidence) in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” i’ve spent many years and struggled hard to get rid of anything prefaced with self. This needs a little more explanation. i have self-esteem but it’s not based on my looks, my position, the clothes wear or the car i drive. In fact it’s not based on anything i can see, hear, taste, touch or smell. which is how the world packages it.

my self-esteem is based on being God’s child, born again of the incorruptible seed. The Lion of Judah represents the triumphant Jesus. King David and Jesus came from the tribe of Judah. Through that lineage i am a Lion of Judah, triumphant and confident in my heritage.

Mirror Confidencemy confidence is in a personal, intimate relationship with God. He is my High Priest, and through His intercession, i can “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that i may receive mercy and find grace to help me in my time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Proverbs 3:26 for me is a guarantee. “For the Lord shall be ed’s confidence, firm and strong, and shall keep ed’s foot from being caught [in a trap or some hidden danger]. Putting my confidence in His revealed Word, changes everything. my life takes on a new stability, focus, and identity. It’s there that i realize, i am smart enough “because i have the mind of Christ, because i have established my thoughts in Him, therefore every step i take is ordered by Him.” Now there are no good days or bad days, no good circumstances or bad circumstances, just days and circumstances filled with grace.

So ed, does not, therefore, fling away his fearless confidence, for it carries a great and glorious compensation of reward. For ed has need of steadfast patience and endurance, so that ed may perform and fully accomplish the will of God, and thus receive and carry away [and enjoy to the full] what is promised. Hebrews 10:35-36

This is my confidence, “i am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in me will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in me.” Philippians 1:6

Practical application is a required element for good information to become life changing versus just good information.

So in order to build up my “FEARLESS CONFIDENCE” i am intentionally committing to not say anything about myself or anyone else that God himself hasn’t or wouldn’t say about me or others.

Ephesians 4:29, ed, let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.

Words and Actions, Words and Actions, ed overcomes (conquers) circumstances, trials, by means of the Blood of the Lamb (confidence) and by the utterance (words) of his testimony, for ed did not love and cling to life (self, flesh) even when faced with death [holding his life cheap till he had to die for his witnessing]. (Revelation 12:11) paraphrased.

After looking at casting lots it only seems right to look at fleeces. The idea of “using a fleece” comes  from the story of Gideon, in Judges 6. To understand the idea of a fleece i felt it necessary to understand the man and the circumstances surrounding it.

Verse 1 But the Israelites did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years. What a way to start out. Seven years is a long time and my mind immediately begins to search… what, if anything, evil have i done in the sight of the Lord?

Verse 6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the Israelites cried to the Lord. Seven years of the enemy encamping against them and destroy the crops as far as Gaza and leave no nourishment for Israel, and no ox or sheep or donkey. For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came like locusts for multitude; both they and their camels could not be counted. So they wasted the land as they entered it.

The Israelites knew what was acceptable in the sight of God and simply chose to do otherwise! Humm… been there and done that. Verse 8 – 9 The Lord sent a prophet to the Israelites, who said to them, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt and brought you forth out of the house of bondage. And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you and gave you their land.

Seven years is a long time in any day and age and under the conditions that Israel was living, they must have forgotten. another hummmmmm… have i forgotten things regarding how God has delivered me?

The prophet had more to say, And I said to you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But you have not obeyed My voice.

Forget everything else and tell me why are you not obeying my voice! What answer is there for me in those situations? Anything i would say would simply be an excuse. An Angel of the Lord comes.

“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him/Gideon and said to him, The Lord is with you, you mighty man of [fearless] courage.”

That makes me chuckle. Early on in my walk in the Word Ann Marie would speak those types of thing to me. I’d wake up at night with her praying over me. She’d call me the spiritual head of the household, which i knew i was not. She was calling those things which were not.

“And Gideon said to him, O sir, if the Lord is with us, why is all this befallen us? And where are all His wondrous works of which our fathers told us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.

Counting Down The Days Until… the close of 2012 comes and 2013 arrives. This is my journey of how to transition from an ending to a beginning and doing so with a new perspective, renewed purpose, and a God plan.

I started reading, no actually rereading a book that came out over 7 years ago. It has never left my mind as one of my top ten but for a reason different from what I will share today. At that time I was a committed fan of another book and a short DVD called Who Moved My Cheese. It was the short DVD that captured my attention as it brought such clarity to me at the time. This current book captured my attention because I thought it would make an incredible short DVD as well and that if done correctly it would bring clarity as well.

If you follow these posts at all, you know that I am doing the “”AA 12 Step Program” for what I defined as my addiction to sin. It has been incredible and I believe has helped me in my endeavour to sin less. Step number four has been a challenge for me as the traditional tools that are available do not work well with my belief system.

Step number four in the 12 Step program is to take a “fearless” moral inventory of my self. But, all the tools I have found seem to deal with the negatives of my past, verses the excitement of my future. i realize there is a place for the traditional tools that are used in the 12 Step program, so i am in no way disregarding the success they have had with these tools. For me it just didn’t fit.

This new book for me is my recommendation to help fulfill step number four. The book is called The Dream Giver. Recently through a chain of events which i will spare you from, i was reaquainted with it. It is so appropriate, for me, for this time of my life and at this time of the year. i am so excited to be closing out 2012 stronger than ever before and I believe I am going into 2013 more prepared than any year past.

There is no way to read this book and/or do the study without looking at where i have been, where i am, and where am i going, but it is done so very cleverly through a short parable.

Bruce Wilkinson says, “The better i understand the journey to my Dream and what God is doing in my life, the less likely i am to abandon my Dream.” He asked me, “Do you feel like God forgot to even give you a Big Dream? Or are you pursuing your dream, but experiencing setback after setback?”

He then says, “If my answer to any of these questions is yes, then this book is for me!” Obviously my answer is yes, not to one, but to both at one time or the other in my life.

Bruce then invites me join him just as i am inviting you to please join with me for the journey of your life. We are doing this as a group on Monday nights at the Onething Campus but I am willing to do it together during these posts as well. Purchase the book, read it and join in by commenting on the post from my journey. I do not usually respond to comments but for these posts I will do my best to keep up should anyone accept the invitation.

I am asking my children, and their family to reread this short book and at least make a conscious effort to take a “Fearless” moral inventory of their lives as we close out another year and prepare for the best year ever in 2013. To my 11-year-old grandson I would offer $20.00 to have read this book by Christmas of 2012, and the be able to have a discussion with me about it. Of course that would mean he would have to read this post to know of the offer.
